Imaging Geographic Atrophy in Age-Related Macular Degeneration

چکیده
Advances in retinal imaging technology have largely contributed to the understanding of the natural history, prognostic markers and disease mechanisms of geographic atrophy (GA) due to age-related macular degeneration. There is still no therapy available to halt or slow the disease process. In order to evaluate potential therapeutic effects in interventional trials, there is a need for precise quantification of the GA progression rate. Fundus autofluorescence imaging allows for accurate identification and segmentation of atrophic areas and currently represents the gold standard for evaluating progressive GA enlargement. By means of highresolution spectral-domain optical coherence tomography, distinct microstructural alterations related to GA can be visualized. Copyright © 2011 S. Karger AG, Basel

متن کاملThe natural history of geographic atrophy, the advanced atrophic form of age-related macular degeneration.
Geographic atrophy is the advanced form of atrophic age-related macular degeneration. It is present in 3.5% of people age 75 and over in the United States. It progresses gradually over time, often sparing the fovea until late in the course of the disease. Forty to fifty percent of eyes with geographic atrophy and good visual acuity at baseline lose three or more lines of acuity by two years and...
متن کاملSpectral domain optical coherence tomography imaging of dry age-related macular degeneration.
Spectral domain optical coherence tomography is a useful new technology for imaging and measuring geographic atrophy (GA) and drusen, the hallmarks of dry age-related macular degeneration (AMD). The advantage of using this novel technique over other imaging modalities for dry AMD is that the same scan pattern can be used to image both drusen and GA while obtaining reproducible, quantitative dat...
متن کاملPredicting the progression of geographic atrophy in age-related macular degeneration with SD-OCT en face imaging of the outer retina.
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE Spectral-domain optical coherence tomography (SD-OCT) en face imaging was used to measure the growth of geographic atrophy (GA) and identify baseline anatomic changes in the outer retina in eyes with nonexudative age-related macular degeneration (AMD). PATIENTS AND METHODS In this prospective study, eyes were imaged using 200 × 200 and 512 × 128 A-scan raster patterns...
متن کاملSegmentation and quantification of retinal lesions in age-related macular degeneration using polarization-sensitive optical coherence tomography.
We present polarization-sensitive optical coherence tomography (PS-OCT) for quantitative assessment of retinal pathologies in age-related macular degeneration (AMD). On the basis of the polarization scrambling characteristics of the retinal pigment epithelium, novel segmentation algorithms were developed that allow one to segment pathologic features such as drusen and atrophic zones in dry AMD ...
